New Year’s Day in Sulphur, Louisiana, became a homicide investigation after police say 1-year-old Acelynn Moss was shot and killed inside her home. Her mother, 28-year-old Kristin Bass, was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder, with bond set at $10 million.

What police say

Police were called to a home on Quelqueshue Street shortly after 8 p.m. last Thursday, where they found the infant had been shot, KPLC reports. Sulphur Police spokesman Maj. Jason Gully identified Kristin Bass as the suspect, and she was taken into custody at the residence.

Family's account

The victim’s father, Bradley Moss, told KPLC that he heard a loud noise and went into the room, where he saw Kristin Bass holding a gun while their 2-year-old called for help. Moss said Bass told him, “I just sent our baby to God,” and later added, “Now I gotta get her,” according to his account to investigators.

Charges and booking

Authorities charged Kristin Bass with first-degree murder and set her bond at $10 million, according to a Sulphur Police Department release reported by People. Jail records reviewed by Law & Crime show Bass was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Jail. Investigators said the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services has taken custody of the surviving 2-year-old.

Investigation and community response

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Sgt. Jeremy Cain at 337-527-4558. The case remains under active investigation, and authorities say further details will be released as they are confirmed.
