A fatal shooting incident has shaken Salt Lake City following an altercation allegedly tied to a bicycle theft near East High School. Shane Hagaman, 23, is the suspect who was arrested after he reportedly confessed to shooting a man accused of stealing his bike; the victim was later identified as 42-year-old Tyson Scott Babb. According to KUTV, Hagaman self-reported the shooting to the authorities and, during his 911 call, claimed that he shot a man who tried to steal his bike and subsequently escaped in a Toyota Tacoma.
The confrontation occurred on Tuesday morning, and police were summoned to the scene around 5 a.m., where they discovered evidence indicating a violent encounter. Investigators found a broken bike lock and multiple shell casings at Hagaman's residence; Babb, the deceased, was dropped off at a local hospital with a fatal gunshot wound to his back and was pronounced dead, as detailed by ABC4. The victim had been trying to flee on the stolen bicycle when he was shot and then entered the passenger side of a white Toyota Tacoma, which was later identified as belonging to him, the arrest affidavit submitted by the police elaborated.
Hagaman has been taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on one count of first-degree felony murder. The Gephardt Daily obtained Hagaman's arrest documents, revealing that police believe "the arrested person engaged in conduct that created a grave risk of death by shooting at the male riding away on the bike and hitting him in the back." This statement indicates that the authorities perceive Hagaman's actions to be excessively dangerous and reckless, leading to Babb's tragic death.
