A suspect is now in custody following a tumultuous pursuit on Friday involving a stolen U-Haul truck that caused multiple vehicle collisions throughout Philadelphia's Northeast neighborhoods. According to a report by 6abc, the chaotic chase began when police spotted the stolen vehicle around 5:45 p.m. in Northeast Philadelphia. The initial chase was swiftly aborted by the authorities over concerns for safety.
Despite police efforts to deescalate the situation by backing off, the driver reportedly continued to hastily speed through the streets, colliding with several cars including an unmarked police vehicle along Harbison Avenue in the Mayfair neighborhood. As noted by FOX 29, an officer did sustain minor injuries amidst the ordeal.
The attempted apprehension of the suspect saw a brief resumption of the chase before it was called off once more, confirmed by NBC Philadelphia. Eventually, the U-Haul was discovered abandoned near the intersection of Ditman Street and Enfield Avenue in Holmesburg, void of any occupants.
Authorities were quick to mobilize and, not long after locating the vehicle, they were able to track the suspect on foot. A man in his 40s was apprehended and is now expected to face a litany of charges, among them assault on a police officer. The identity of the suspect and the complete list of charges have yet to be formally disclosed. Witnesses to the incident are urged to contact the Philadelphia police with any relevant information.
