Two suspects have been apprehended in connection with the Santa Rosa Transit Mall shooting that injured two teenagers last Sunday, in an armed robbery that turned violent. The Santa Rosa Police Department, as detailed in a news release, reported the arrest of 18-year-old Omar Serrano and a 17-year-old male, both of whom are believed to be gang members involved in the incident.

During the robbery, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the shoulder and back, while a 14-year-old sustained a grazing wound. Both victims have since been released from the hospital, according to a statement from the Santa Rosa Police Department. Serrano and the minor were later tracked down following a large-scale surveillance operation involving multiple departmental units, including the Violent Crimes Investigations Team and the Gang Crimes Team. K9 units and air support from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the effort. The operation ultimately led to the peaceful detention of both suspects yesterday.

Investigators initially responded to the scene and, with support from the Gang Crimes Team, identified the individuals responsible. When the arrests were made, Serrano was found in a parked vehicle with an acquaintance, while the younger suspect was apprehended outside his residence. Searches were conducted at several locations associated with the suspects, with clothing articles seized for evidence, but no firearms were found.

Charges against the suspects include robbery, assault with a firearm, and participation in a criminal street gang, among other violations, the community has raised concerns about a potential connection between this incident and another shooting of a 14-year-old at MLK Park, however, the Santa Rosa Police Department’s investigations have clarified that, while the suspects arrested are affiliated with the same gang, they were not involved in the MLK Park shooting.

The Santa Rosa Police Department is also collaborating with the City of Santa Rosa Violence Prevention Partnership, emphasizing the need to provide aid to impacted neighborhoods and families. Information regarding both incidents is still sought after, with the department encouraging anyone with knowledge to come forward. A reward of up to $2,500 from the Sonoma County Alliance Community Engagement and Safety Rewards Fund has been announced, targeting tips that could lead to the arrest of more suspects involved in these crimes.
