Early Friday morning, a terrifying wrong-way crash on Interstate 94 near downtown Milwaukee resulted in critical injuries and a temporary shutdown of the eastbound lane. As per the TMJ4 report, the incident, which is under investigation as a suspected OWI — operating while intoxicated — took place around 5:15 a.m. inside the Marquette Interchange. A Chevy Malibu, carrying two individuals, merged onto the freeway incorrectly via the Saint Paul Avenue off-ramp and subsequently crashed into a Chevy Equinox.
The violent impact left the sole occupant of the Chevy Equinox in critical condition and both the driver and passenger of the Chevy Malibu with serious injuries, as documented in the WISN coverage. Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office released harrowing body camera footage showing deputies breaking windows and slicing through airbags to extract the wrong-way driver, amidst the wreckage left by the head-on collision. The driver had neglected six clear "Wrong Way" and "Do Not Enter" signs before the crash, as reported by TMJ4.
In response to the incident and the broader issue of wrong-way driving in the area, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley highlighted the urgency for increased collaboration with state authorities to augment road safety measures. "We always need greater partnership with the state of Wisconsin," Crowley insisted, according to TMJ4. The importance of such cooperation was echoed by the establishment of a Wrong Way Driver's Task Force by Wisconsin's Department of Transportation in 2024, aiming to mitigate hazards with improved signage and roadway designs.
The county has implemented advanced technologies to curb these perilous incidents, now operating 20 wrong-way driver alert systems. "We've gotten a lot of stops, and sometimes, again, it's an elderly person that's confused," Sgt. Robert Worzalla described the impact of these systems in an interview with TMJ4. According to federal crash data from 2019 to 2023 detailed by TMJ4, Wisconsin ranks third nationally in deadly wrong-way collisions. Local infrastructural responses remain a critical countermeasure to such persistent threats on Milwaukee streets.
The aftermath of the crash prompted authorities to close I-94 eastbound for several hours, causing considerable traffic disruption on a critical artery of downtown Milwaukee. The lane reopened later in the morning, as stated by FOX6 News. As investigations continue, law enforcement urges the public to stay vigilant and report any sightings of wrong-way drivers immediately by calling 911, a public safety precaution that protects all who traverse these shared paths of our city's movement.
