A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper was hospitalized after a pursuit turned violent in Brentwood, as reported by WSMV. The chase began late Sunday night when the trooper tried to stop a Hyundai Sonata driven by 46-year-old Gregory Volkens on I-65 north. The situation escalated when Volkens fled the traffic stop, eventually driving on the wrong side of the road on Old Hickory Boulevard, where he collided head-on with another vehicle.
Both Volkens and his 40-year-old female companion were injured in the crash, as was the 27-year-old woman driving the collided Sonata. Despite his injuries, Volkens fled the scene on foot, leading to a manhunt that included a K-9 unit from the Metro Nashville Police Department, which later located him at a nearby apartment complex where he was hiding beneath a deck, according to a Williamson Source report. During the foot pursuit, one of the troopers sustained injuries necessitating hospital treatment.
The escapade did not end quietly for Volkens, who, after being discovered, was transported to the hospital due to a K-9 inflicted bite wound. Fox17 detailed that in addition to the ground search, authorities also deployed a helicopter to scour the neighborhoods. Volkens now faces multiple charges, including two counts of reckless endangerment and evading arrest.
Details on the condition of the trooper have not been disclosed yet; however, the Tennessee Highway Patrol reported that Volkens’s passenger may also be facing charges. The crash and subsequent events caused significant disruption late Sunday night, and the authorities are currently investigating the entire incident. Metro dispatch has yet to release further information on the trooper's injuries or the condition of the other individuals involved in the crash.
