In a bid to safeguard Texas from a looming agricultural crisis, Governor Greg Abbott has taken the proactive step of issuing a statewide disaster declaration in response to the potential infiltration of the New World Screwworm (NWS) fly. As reported on Texas government's official website, Governor Abbott emphasized the urgency of preempting the parasitic threat which, although not currently detected within Texas or the broader United States, is advancing northward from Mexico, endangering the vitality of livestock and wildlife alike.

"State law authorizes me to act to prevent a threat of infestation that could cause severe damage to Texas property, and I will not wait for such harm to reach our livestock and wildlife," Governor Abbott stated, acknowledging the severity of the threat and the necessity for immediate action. The declaration empowers the Texas NWS Response Team, comprised of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC), to exert full use of state prevention and response resources to counter the screwworm's possible advent.

Further fortifying this defensive stance, a partnership has been forged with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Secretary Brooke Rollins, culminating in a substantial investment for the battle against the NWS fly. As part of the collaboration, a $750 million Domestic Sterile NWS Production Facility is set to be established in Edinburg, Texas. This facility is envisioned to become a critical asset in the production of sterile flies, a proven method for controlling populations of screwworms through release into the wild, thereby interrupting the breeding cycle.

The screwworm, known for its destructive larval stage, which feasts on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, had been eradicated from the United States by the late 20th century, due to rigorous control measures including the implementation of the sterile insect technique. However, the specter of its return necessitates continued vigilance and decisive measures, as demonstrated by Governor Abbott's disaster declaration. The steps undertaken by the Texas government reflect a deep understanding that the health of the state's agriculture and wildlife is intrinsically linked to the well-being of its economy and the livelihoods of countless Texans.
