A tense situation unfolded on Sunday night in Tigard as Washington County Sheriff's deputies faced a fiery domestic disturbance. The incident occurred at a residence on SW Eldorado Drive when a man, identified as 37-year-old Jaime Lopez, barricaded himself inside his home after a domestic dispute was reported around 10:49 p.m., according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered that Lopez had a felony warrant out for his arrest, which led to the request for additional units. After other family members left the premises, Lopez remained inside, where he was believed to have firearms. The standoff escalated when Lopez began to start fires within the dwelling, resisting arrest and ignoring attempts at negotiations.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office brought in their Tactical Negotiations Team (TNT) and Crisis Negotiations Unit (CNU), working to coax Lopez out peacefully. The standoff, however, took a dangerous turn as Lopez set the house ablaze from the inside. As the situation deteriorated, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue (TVF&R) had to step in, not only to manage the fire but also in concert with TNT to finally rescue Lopez from the inflamed structure.

Once outside, Lopez was treated for burns and smoke inhalation before being taken to the hospital, where he remains under police custody. Washington County Sheriff's Office has listed the charges Lopez will face: first-degree arson, a felony warrant from the Oregon State Parole Board, and domestic harassment. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of surrounding agencies, no other injuries were reported as the resulting fire was contained and extinguished.

Authorities say further investigations are expected, and additional charges may be filed. Officials noted that the incident highlights the potential dangers of domestic disputes involving individuals capable of harming themselves or others. Local law enforcement continues to review the events leading up to the situation, and community members have expressed appreciation for the swift response of officers and first responders in preventing the incident from escalating.
