The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has arrested Towns County Sheriff’s Office official Major John McCoy on multiple charges, including Theft by Deception, Violation of Oath of Office, and three counts of False Statements and Writings, the agency reported.
McCoy’s arrest comes after an investigation that began in July 2025, initiated by a request from Enotah Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Joy Parks. The inquiry centered on allegations of theft connected to the accountability court program. As a sworn law enforcement officer, McCoy was responsible for conducting home visits for program participants, and discrepancies in his activities prompted the charges now filed against him, according to GBI.
McCoy is scheduled to be booked into the Union County Detention Center as part of the legal process. The investigation remains active as authorities continue to examine the details of the case.
Authorities are asking the public for information to assist with the investigation. The GBI encourages anyone with relevant details to contact the Towns County Sheriff’s Office at 706-896-4444 or the Regional Investigative Office in Cleveland, GA, at 706-348-4866.
