Two teenagers were arrested in Queens following a stabbing that resulted in the death of 17-year-old Josue Argudo. According to Gothamist, one of the 17-year-old suspects turned himself in to NYPD detectives and faces charges of murder and weapons possession. The second suspect, 18-year-old Derek Trejo, was taken into custody yesterday and faces similar charges.
The incident in Woodhaven last Friday afternoon has drawn significant attention from the local community. Surveillance footage shows an individual appearing to chase Argudo down 85th Avenue, reportedly with a knife. Residents recalled Argudo as energetic and humorous. "He was a young soul, full of energy. You know he was always cracking jokes," a woman told ABC7NY.
The investigation into the fatal incident is ongoing. Residents are mourning the loss of a teenager described as energetic, and the incident has drawn attention to concerns about youth violence in the area. Trejo’s arrest comes after previous court appearances on weapons possession and gang assault charges, as reported by Gothamist. He had been released without bail on those earlier charges.
As legal proceedings continue, the Queens community is responding to the loss. Argudo, who had arrived in the United States less than a year ago, was attacked a few blocks from his home. A family member has created an online donation page to assist with funeral expenses. Rep. Nydia Velázquez shared on social media that violence in the community is a serious concern. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of Argudo’s death.
