In an operation slightly off the coast of California, the U.S. Coast Guard took action against an unidentified vessel, which resulted in the interception of 15 individuals southwest of San Clemente Island. According to a report released by the U.S. Coast Guard, the incident occurred yesterday, approximately 24 miles from the island.
Details provided by the Coast Guard reveal that at 9:43 PM on Monday, operators at the Sector San Diego Joint Harbor Operations Center were alerted of a vessel heading into U.S. waters. The reporting agent stated that the boat appeared to be experiencing propulsion problems, although the reasons for the malfunction were unclear. The Coast Guard Cutter David Duren (WPC 1156) was quickly dispatched to the scene.
The response was efficiently conducted without the need for force. The Coast Guard's boarding team approached the stranded panga, a type of modest-sized, open fishing boat, and made contact with the vessel's occupants. This maritime encounter with the 15 people on board unfolded without incident or resistance.
All individuals intercepted claimed Mexican nationality when questioned by the authorities. The group was subsequently transferred by the Coast Guard to Ballast Point, where they were handed over to another Department of Homeland Security agency for further processing. The specifics of each individual's situation, along with the events that led them to embark on such a perilous journey, have not been disclosed.
