In a move that some are calling a retreat from international collaboration, the United States has formally exited the World Health Organization (WHO). Governor Jared Polis of Colorado has swiftly responded, emphasizing the risk this poses to national and state public health efforts. According to the Colorado Governor's Office, Polis criticized the withdrawal as a step away from the U.S.'s role as a global leader in health, potentially putting American and Coloradoan lives at risk.
The governor pointed out that diseases know no boundaries, decrying the federal Government's decision as shortsighted. "The United States leaving the World Health Organization is a step back from global leadership, and is a reckless decision that weakens public health preparedness and puts American lives at risk," Polis stated, as per the Colorado Governor's Office. This sentiment underscores the significance of aligning with global health protocols, especially in an era when pandemics can have a substantial reach and rapid impact.
Undeterred by federal policy shifts, Governor Polis announced Colorado's intention to double down on their commitment to public health by working through the Governor's Public Health Alliance (GPHA). This state-led coalition focuses on sharing information and coordinating responses to health threats. Governor Polis has made it clear that Colorado will continue to prioritize science and preparedness despite the challenges posed by the absence of federal support from the WHO.
