New Year’s celebrations across the Valley were marred by an outbreak of house fires, leaving multiple families displaced at the start of 2026. The evening, traditionally illuminated by fireworks, turned into a series of emergency calls for local firefighters grappling with the blaze. According to a report by ABC15, incidents in Phoenix, Gilbert, and Chandler are under investigation with no injuries reported.
In Gilbert, after a loud explosion reportedly shook their home late Wednesday night, Barb and her family, visiting from Minnesota, were forced to evacuate, as recounted in a statement obtained by ABC15. Leaving out safely from their garage safely, the fire spread to their attic. Neighbors suspect fireworks may have been involved, but the cause remains unknown until safety allows investigators to enter. Touched by the incident, yet hopeful, Barb told ABC15, "We've got a lot of stresses ahead of us, We just believe god is good and he's got something in this for us."
Similarly, the Phoenix Fire Department responded to a house fire near 19th and Dunlap avenues, and Chandler fire crews attended a blaze near 132nd Street and Chandler Boulevard on the morning of New Year's Day. These situations followed a distressingly regular pattern, with the Peoria Fire Department confirming a substantial increase in callouts due to New Year’s Eve festivities—many linked to illegal fireworks use, as detailed in an article by 12 News.
On a night where Station 191 typically expects two to four service calls, the reality became far busier shortly after New Year's Eve celebrations peaked. Some of the calls turned out to be false alarms, firefighting crews had to deal with several actual flames, including at least one caused by fireworks, and a small blaze, as reported by a 12 News ride-along with the department. Crews in Peoria also rushed to contend with the carelessly discarded remains of pyrotechnics igniting dumpster fires. Throughout their efforts, the firefighters maintained commendable response times, less than five minutes for each destination, amidst the chaos that unfolded on that evening.
As families face the daunting task of rebuilding their lives, with some starting the new year without a home, the Valley's New Year’s Day serves as a stark reminder of the very real consequences that often follow celebrations with illegal fireworks. While the investigations continue into the specific causes of each blaze, the correlation between New Year's Eve and a spike in fire emergencies remains evident.
