In an act of tribute both poignant and powerful, a high school hockey team in the Valley is aiming to not only clinch another state championship but to simultaneously memorialize a beloved teammate whose battles off the ice cut his aspirations short. Graysen Briggs, whose presence is felt in a memorial jersey draped over the bench at every game, succumbed to an "extremely rare" pediatric cancer, rendering his jersey number GB-93 an eternal fixture within the team, according to Yahoo News.
This past weekend, as the Pinnacle Pioneers fought on the ice in the state high school quarterfinals, they sought to continue a legacy that transcends the cold confines of the rink. In a statement obtained by ABC15, Michele Briggs, Graysen's mother, expressed gratitude to the team, saying, "They have been so good to honoring our son, and we're very thankful for them." It is here where sports and solemn memory intertwine, reminding us to never forget to hold fast to the spirit of those who have skated ahead.
Graysen's journey through pancreatic cancer—an ailment striking less than one child per million annually, according to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation—was marked by unwavering passion for the sport he loved. Despite a diagnosis shortly after his 15th birthday, the game remained a thread woven into the fabric of his life. "He loved every part of it, and it meant so much to him," Michele Briggs conveyed in an ABC15 interview. Though Graysen could not join his teammates on the ice during his illness, his commitment never faltered, as he steadfastly took his place alongside coaches and players alike, whether from the bench or the locker room.
In their previous season's triumph, the Pioneers carried more than a team's pride—they carried Graysen's jersey with them, enshrining it within the victory of the state title. This symbol of unity and remembrance once again accompanied the players onto the ice, embodying the resilience and bonds of a team touched by profound loss but empowered to skate onward fiercely in honor of one of their own. "He will forever be GB-93, so that's his number," Michele proudly stated, as was reported by a Yahoo News video.
