In the ongoing battle against pesky mosquitoes, Volusia County is stepping up once more to offer a helping hand to residents. The County's Mosquito Control Division will host a Tire Amnesty event, where locals can get rid of old tires that serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. This free event is slated for January 24, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., at the Volusia County Fairgrounds located at 3150 E. New York Ave., in DeLand. Orange City, FL – Government's social media post announced the details of the initiative, urging the community to take advantage of the tire disposal service.
Residents can lug up to 20 tires per household to the fairgrounds, where they will be able to drive through and drop them off, thus, contributing to a collective quest for a healthier environment. The guidelines are clear – tires need to be off the rim, and they are only taking residential tires. Remember, you’ll need a proof of Volusia County residency, as commercial tires are a no-go at this event. Previous iterations have proven successful, with the November event seeing the collection of more than 800 tires.
The purpose of this event is straightforward: to diminish the number of spots where water can accumulate and mosquitos can proliferate. Those old tires abandoned in yards across the county are not just eyesores; they are miniature ecosystems where the mosquito larvae thrive. By getting rid of these unwanted tires, Volusia County aims to reduce the mosquito population and, by extension, the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses, which can pose serious health risks to the community.
