Washington D.C. and surrounding regions are bracing for a major winter ordeal as a severe cold snap pairs with a brewing storm, expected to lay a heavy cloak of snow and ice across the area. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Baltimore/Washington (NWS) has issued multiple advisories, underscoring the serious nature of the incoming weather conditions.
A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM EST this morning, with wind chills predicted to plummet to as low as 10 degrees below zero which could pose hypothermia risks. "The cold wind chills as low as 10 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken," cautions the NWS. The current humidity stands at a bone-dry 36%, with northwest winds blowing at 20 mph, and a current temperature that feels like a frigid -9°F due to wind chill.
As the evening approaches, the situation is expected to deteriorate further. The Winter Storm Warning, which starts from 11 PM tonight and extends to 4 AM EST Monday, anticipates significant snow and sleet accumulations between 7 and 14 inches, according to the NWS. The agency warns that "Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible." Residents in and around the capital are advised to delay travel and to keep essentials such as extra flashlights and water in their vehicles, should they find themselves braving the treacherous conditions.
The onslaught will begin tonight with heavy snowfall predicted to commence after 11 PM and could dump an additional 3 to 5 inches overnight. Tomorrow, the scenario will shift as snow and sleet turn to freezing rain and sleet, potentially mixed with additional snowfall. "A prolonged period of wind chills in the teens and single digits continues this evening and lasting through the middle of next week, with sub-zero wind chills possible at times," the NWS warns. Residents must prepare for a stark and frigid awakening.
The forecast spells out a disruptive weather pattern for the days ahead, with Monday seeing a slight chance of more snow flurries before the sky clears, though the respite will be brief with temperatures dipping to around 4 degrees at night. The rest of the week appears to toe the line between sunny stretches and the possibility of more snow by Wednesday night.
