Police say a violent confrontation inside an Austin home on Monday afternoon ended with one man hospitalized and another in handcuffs within minutes on Chicago's West Side.
Authorities have charged 43-year-old Curtis Conner after a 38-year-old man was seriously injured with what police described as a deadly weapon inside a residence on the 5300 block of West Madison Street. Officers took Conner into custody roughly 20 minutes after the alleged assault, and he now faces multiple felony counts tied to the incident, according to Chicago police.
Charges and allegations
Conner is charged with four felonies: attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, armed violence involving a weapon, and a sex-offender registration-related violation, according to the Chicago Sun‑Times. The outlet reports police said the 38-year-old victim suffered a "serious injury" in the attack and that investigators are still trying to determine what led up to the violence.
Arrest on the block
Officers from the Chicago Police Department's Area Four bureau arrested Conner around 4:30 p.m. Monday in the 5300 block of West Madison after identifying him as the suspect in the earlier assault, according to FOX 32 Chicago. The station reports Conner was detained on the scene roughly 20 minutes after officers responded, and that the timeline and arrest details came from CPD.
Sex-offender registration
One of the charges stems from an alleged violation of sex-offender registration rules. The Illinois State Police online sex-offender registry lists a Curtis Conner as a lifetime registrant and labels that profile as "non-compliant" on the agency's public details page. Those records show prior registration dates and the state's status designation, according to Illinois State Police.
Local context
The 5300 block of West Madison has been no stranger to serious violence in recent years. In March 2024, a mass shooting there killed a 19-year-old woman and wounded several others, highlighting ongoing safety concerns on parts of the West Side. That incident and the follow-up investigations were reported by ABC7 Chicago.
What happens next
Conner is expected to appear in bond court for a detention hearing on Thursday as prosecutors consider formal filings and any potential bail conditions, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Chicago police have not released additional information about a possible motive. Detectives in Area Four are continuing the investigation and are asking anyone with relevant information to contact investigators.
