The City of West Sacramento has announced the launch of its 2026 Community Academy, a free educational program designed to give residents insight into local government operations. The seven-session program is scheduled to begin in March and will offer participants an overview of the city’s various departments through interactive presentations and discussions. City officials say the academy aims to increase public understanding of municipal services and encourage community engagement.

According to the City of West Sacramento, the program will provide participants with an in-depth look at city infrastructure and operations, including presentations from the Police and Fire Departments, as well as briefings on water treatment processes and roadway project planning. City officials said the initiative is intended to promote transparency and strengthen civic engagement by offering residents a clearer understanding of the roles and responsibilities of various departments, including the City Clerk’s office. The program is designed to help residents become more informed about how local government functions.

Aside from rubbing shoulders with city leaders and getting conversational with chiefs of Police and Fire, participants of the program are said to step out with a better grasp of their community workings. There's talk of empowerment and involvement, with past graduates going on to advocate for city programs or even joining advisory commissions.

The 2026 Community Academy is open to all West Sacramento residents and will begin in March. The city opened the application portal on January 2. Residents interested in participating can find the application and additional program details on the City of West Sacramento’s website at www.cityofwestsacramento.org. City officials say the program is intended to educate residents about local government operations and encourage greater community involvement.
