In a show of everyday heroism that diverges from the perilous engagements we so often associate with police work, a Westlake officer has illustrated the softer, oft-overlooked side of law enforcement. Responding to a distress call yesterday, January 20, Westlake patrolman identified as Ptl. Reyes demonstrated the breadth of police duties — aiding not just humans in need but also their four-legged companions. In a post shared by the City of Westlake Ohio Police Department, we're given a glimpse into an officer's day that ended on a compassionate note.
The call came from a resident, presumably at her wits' end, who had under her care a yellow lab suffering a medical emergency. Stricken with urgency but physically unable to hoist the ailing canine into her vehicle for a trip to the vet, she reached out to the police department — a beacon to gravitate toward when all other lights seem to dim. "She was not physically able to lift the dog into an SUV to transport it to the vet," echoed the social media post. Ptl. Reyes responded and compassionately helped the family," as told on the City of Westlake Ohio Police Department's Facebook page.
Situations such as these serve to gently remind us that the purview of our local guardians stretches beyond the oft-televised chases and confrontations. The aid provided by Reyes was a simple act, devoid of any violence or chase, yet it echoes profoundly within the chambers of community trust and service. The outcome was heartening for the dog, known as K9 Sunny, who is, thankfully, now under the diligent care of a veterinarian and is expected to make a good recovery.
