Chagrin Falls High School has vaulted into the top 1% of high schools nationally, climbing from No. 664 to No. 200 in a single year and landing at No. 3 in Ohio, according to the newly released U.S. News and World Report Best High Schools rankings. The jump puts the village's roughly 600-student school ahead of every other high school in the Cleveland area, a distinction that has school leaders eager to explain exactly how they got there.
The rankings, based on the 2023-2024 school year, place Chagrin Falls High School as the top-rated high school in the Cleveland region, as reported by Cleveland.com. U.S. News used six factors built around state assessment performance and college preparation measures, including Advanced Placement test scores, according to that same report. Superintendent Jennifer Penczarski said the ranking was worth celebrating, telling Cleveland.com she believes the district's classroom improvements over the past three years led directly to the improved standing.
“We made intentional choices over several years to strengthen the learning environment and expand opportunities for students,” Penczarski said, per Cleveland.com. Those choices reportedly included moving to an eight-period schedule, introducing a Tiger Advisory period three times a week, and joining a personalized learning network that gave teachers additional resources, all implemented during the 2023-2024 school year. District leaders plan to present the data behind the top rating at the school board meeting on Wednesday.
A Multi-Year Climb in AP Performance
The district's own academic data shows the ranking surge did not happen overnight. Chagrin Falls High School's mean AP exam score rose from 3.38 in spring 2023 to 3.73 in spring 2024, then climbed further to 3.86 in spring 2026, according to Chagrin Falls Exempted Village Schools. The share of AP exam scores earning a passing mark of 3 or higher also grew steadily, from 74.8% in 2023 to 85.5% in 2024 and reaching 92.5% in 2025, the district has reported.
The school offers 28 distinct AP courses, alongside dual-enrollment pathways like College Credit Plus and vocational training through Excel TECC, though U.S. News methodology only factors AP and IB participation into its college-readiness metrics, the district notes. Enrollment at the high school sits at approximately 575 to 650 students across grades 9 through 12, with state assessment proficiency rates reaching 98% in reading and 95% in math, according to Niche.
Outpacing Regional Rivals
In the 2026-27 U.S. News regional rankings, Chagrin Falls topped several other high-performing Cleveland-area schools, including Rocky River High School at No. 5 in Ohio and No. 228 nationally, Solon High School at No. 6 in Ohio and No. 237 nationally, and Hudson High School at No. 9 in Ohio and No. 310 nationally, according to WKYC. Statewide, only Cincinnati's Walnut Hills High School outranked Chagrin Falls, holding the No. 1 spot in Ohio and No. 76 nationally as the only Ohio public high school to crack the national top 100, the station reported. The full evaluation reviewed performance data from more than 27,000 public high schools across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., placing nearly 18,000 of them in its national rankings, per WKYC.
State Report Card Backs Up the Gains
Chagrin Falls' academic momentum isn't limited to the U.S. News formula. On the 2024 Ohio Department of Education and Workforce report card, Chagrin Falls Schools was one of only 18 districts statewide to achieve a five-star rating across all five evaluated components, recording a district Performance Index of 111, according to the Geauga County Maple Leaf. That independent state accountability data reinforces the district's broader academic standing beyond any single ranking system.
The high school's campus is also woven into village life well beyond the classroom. It serves as a central civic gathering spot, hosting the hot-air balloon glow during the 70-year-old Blossom Time festival each Memorial Day weekend. With the school board meeting set for Wednesday, district leaders are expected to lay out in more detail how the classroom changes of the past three years translated into the jump from No. 664 to No. 200 nationally.
