As a major winter storm bears down on Texas, Houston's airports are thrust into disarray, prompting travel advisories from major airlines and leading to a spree of preemptive flight cancellations. According to KPRC, Southwest Airlines has listed Houston's Hobby Airport among many others, which could experience delays, diversions, or cancellations between yesterday and Monday.
Travel anxiety is rising at Bush Intercontinental Airport as an approaching storm disrupts flights. FlightAware reported more than 3,000 cancellations on Saturday, with nearly 4,500 expected on Sunday, KHOU said.
Airport personnel are preparing for the storm by treating roads and readying equipment. The Office of Emergency Management confirmed its readiness. Travelers like Melissa Maestas, who flew in from Utah, told KHOU, “I kept telling them, let's come in early so we can get there and be okay.”
Those fortunate to have left Houston prior to the storm's arrival expressed relief, with Detroit-bound Ndeye Ka commenting to KHOU, "Yes, I'm happy to leave because I don't know what you guys are going to do." Meanwhile, travelers altering their plans, like Shani Hagelberger, were able to secure an earlier departure with her son, recounting, "We were supposed to fly out Sunday morning at 6 a.m., and we've just been watching the weather, and we decided it was our best bet to try and get back home."
United Airlines said it is monitoring the winter storm and has issued waivers for affected cities. Passengers are advised to stay updated on flight status and remain flexible with travel plans.
