The National Weather Service office in Morristown has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 1 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. EST Sunday. Forecasts indicate that parts of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia could see snowfall totals ranging from 4 to 6 inches. The anticipated heavy snow may result in difficult travel conditions, particularly during the Friday evening commute.

Alongside the Winter Storm Warning, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. EST Saturday through 1 p.m. EST Sunday, with wind chills forecast to range from 5 to 10 degrees below zero in some locations. The NWS stated that the low wind chills may increase the risk of hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Residents are advised to wear appropriate winter clothing when outdoors and keep pets indoors as much as possible during the period of cold weather.

There is a slight chance of snow showers before noon, transitioning to rain showers, then changing back to snow showers after 2 p.m. Temperatures are predicted to reach a high near 38 degrees, with light winds becoming northerly at around 5 mph in the afternoon. The chance of precipitation is about 40 percent during the day, increasing to 80 percent with snow showers expected this evening.

Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible tonight, with snow showers continuing into Saturday. On Saturday, snow showers are expected mainly before 1 p.m., with additional snowfall of similar amounts. Temperatures are forecast to be around 22 degrees, with wind chills making it feel between 4 and 9 degrees. Gusty winds up to 25 mph may further intensify the winter conditions, according to the NWS.

In light of the hazardous conditions, the NWS advises travelers to keep essentials—such as an extra flashlight, food, and water—in their vehicles in case of emergencies. Up-to-date road conditions can be obtained by calling 511. With the winter storm and extreme cold expected to continue through the weekend, residents are also encouraged to report snow-related observations to support ongoing weather monitoring.
