Early on December 31, a Yavapai County deputy responded to a call about two 1-year-old infants left home alone in Congress, Arizona. The father confirmed he had left the children while going to work, according to YCSO.
The deputy quickly went to the residence and found a generator running outside, with an extension cord leading into a partially open door. Inside, the infants were strapped into car seats in front of an active space heater, with no adults present.
After finding no other occupants, the deputy called the Congress Fire Department, which arrived to check on the children. With the house cold and without power, the firefighters took the infants to their station for safety and warmth.
An hour later, the parents, 41-year-old Thomas Jordan and 25-year-old Maira Moreno, were located and arrested for child abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia. The children have been placed in the care of the Department of Child Safety, and the investigation is ongoing.
The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Congress Fire Department for their prompt response and care for the infants. “This incident highlights exactly why we trust our deputies to rely on their experience and to treat every call seriously. I am proud of this deputy's quick thinking and his commitment to make sure these two infants were safe.” Sheriff Rhodes said.
