The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) Volunteers in Protection (VIP) program is getting a significant boost thanks to a generous grant aimed at enhancing emergency response capabilities, according to the YCSO website. The VIPs, who contribute their time and skills to supplement law enforcement efforts, are the recipients of a $20,000 grant from the Invest in Others Charitable Foundation, based in Boston, MA.

Out of nearly 550 applications filed nationwide, the YCSO VIP was one of just 16 grant awardees, securing funds that will go towards equipping each VIP patrol vehicle with an automated external defibrillator (AED) and that isn't the only perk; they’ll also receive individual first aid kits to wear on their bodies, and training for both CPR and First Aid certification. "The money will go towards outfitting each VIP patrol vehicle with an automated external defibrillator (AED) and for training on its use, along with providing each VIP member with a body-worn Individual First Aid Kit," Dave Schaper, a VIP Patrol and Training Unit member, told the YCSO website.

An AED, crucial in the event of sudden cardiac arrest, is a portable device designed to deliver an electric shock to the heart, thereby attempting to restore its normal rhythm. The availability of such devices on patrol and the training to use them are instrumental in providing immediate aid during critical emergencies, potentially saving lives before the arrival of medical professionals.

Equally essential is the training aspect of the grant, which ensures that each VIP member not only has the equipment necessary for such urgent situations, but also the knowledge and skills to use them effectively in the field. These volunteers will also be trained to become certified in CPR and First Aid. "The VIPs will also be trained to become certified in CPR and First Aid," Schaper reiterated the importance of this comprehensive preparation in his statement to the YCSO website.
