An 18-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder following a fatal stabbing that occurred at Halloran Park in Cleveland's Jefferson neighborhood last weekend. Cleveland Division of Police responded to a distressing call around 5 p.m. on Saturday to find a man grievously wounded and slumped over, as reported by WKYC. The victim, later identified as Jesus Rodriguez, 39, was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The quick apprehension of the suspect, Amontay Billups, on Sunday, was largely attributed to the "great proactive work" of a First District Sergeant and accompanying officers, who managed to soon detain him within the vicinity of the crime scene. He was found with a sharp-edged weapon, which was seized as evidence. "This dangerous individual is off our streets — the first step toward justice for this awful crime," proclaimed Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd, in a statement obtained by FOX 8 News.
Upon searching for leads, investigators suggested an assault took place without any apparent motivation. Billups was then taken into custody and charged with murder, with investigators continuing to seek additional evidence from subsequent search warrants executed on the city's west side, shared Cleveland 19 News. Notably, police also mentioned that Billups might be connected to a separate stabbing incident that occurred on February 9, although these charges remain pending the ongoing investigation.
