A tragic incident unfolded on Friday night in Leesburg when a pedestrian, identified as Michael Anthony Iles, age 53, was hit and fatally injured by a van. The vehicle involved was a white 2016 van, driven by a 50-year-old Orlando man heading southbound on the highway.
Preliminary information cited by the Leesburg Police Department revealed that the driver, Ryan Surjan of Orlando, struck Iles as he was attempting to cross the road. Despite efforts by the Lake County Fire Rescue, Iles sustained life-threatening injuries and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Following the incident, WESH noted that the southbound lanes of U.S. 27 were closed to properly allow the investigation to proceed for about three hours.
