A late-night pursuit through the backcountry of southeastern San Diego County ended in tragedy yesterday when a motorcyclist crashed and died at Merigan Fire Road and Viejas Boulevard in the Descanso community. The collision was reported around 9:16 PM, and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the rider's name, age, or gender as the investigation continues.
According to CBS News 8, which credited City News Service, a California State Parks sergeant told the California Highway Patrol that officers had been pursuing the motorcycle before the crash. CHP investigators responded to the site and began piecing together what led up to the fatal impact.
Where the collision occurred
Merigan Fire Road leads into Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, according to the park's official Cuyamaca Rancho State Park page. The area has posted vehicle access rules and day-use hours, and the Merigan trailhead is a popular entry point for hikers and equestrians. Those narrow, winding mountain routes are a known hazard for recreational travelers and can make emergency response more complicated.
Investigation under way
The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash and was assisted at the scene by State Parks personnel, CBS News 8 reported. Officials said they are reviewing how the pursuit and roadway conditions may have factored into what happened and will release additional details when they are ready. For now, investigators are keeping the rider's identity confidential.
Traffic in the immediate area was temporarily rerouted while crews processed the scene. The Descanso community sits east of San Diego along Highway 79 and draws visitors headed to the state park, creating a blend of local and recreational drivers on those backcountry roads. Authorities have not yet provided further information about the crash.
