A pre-dawn basement fire tore through a two-story, multi-family home in East New York, injuring five people, officials reported. The blaze began around 5:30 a.m., and firefighters evacuated residents while EMS treated the injured on the street. Three people sustained minor injuries and declined hospital care, while two others were evaluated for more serious injuries.
As News 12 Brooklyn reported, the fire began in the basement and worked its way up through the building. Close to 80 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the scene to battle the flames. Officials told the outlet that fire marshals had been notified to investigate, and crews ultimately got the blaze under control as concerned neighbors watched from the sidewalk.
FDNY Investigators To Determine Cause
According to the FDNY, fire marshals in the Bureau of Fire Investigation are trained to pinpoint where and how a blaze started and can pursue criminal charges if arson or gross negligence is suspected. Marshals use K-9 units and technical scene analysis for more complex incidents and are typically called to multi-family house fires to secure evidence and interview witnesses.
Fire Trends In East New York
East New York and surrounding blocks have been dealing with a string of significant fires this winter, with local reporting citing multiple multi-alarm incidents that have injured residents and forced evacuations. That pattern has stirred concerns about aging housing stock and basement-origin fires that can rapidly spread upward through multi-family homes, according to the Brooklyn Paper.
Resources And Safety Tips
Neighbors who are displaced or need assistance may be able to get help from the American Red Cross in Greater New York, which often opens shelters and provides emergency relief after local fires. The FDNY also promotes its GetAlarmedNYC initiative, which offers free smoke alarm installations and fire-safety education for residents. Officials urge households to regularly test smoke alarms and keep exits and hallways clear in case a quick escape is needed.
