The early-morning quiet in Frankfort did not last long Friday. Misty McMichael, widow of Chicago Bears great Steve "Mongo" McMichael, was arrested in Will County and is charged with domestic battery, according to court records. Deputies say the call that brought them to the home started as a 911 hang-up, and a man at the scene later alleged she choked him during an argument. Deputies reported seeing scratches on his neck. McMichael, 55, told deputies the dispute never turned physical and was taken to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.
What deputies say
Will County sheriff's deputies say they were sent around 5:25 a.m. to a home on Kuse Road in Frankfort for a 911 hang-up and welfare check, according to FOX 32 Chicago. A man at the residence told deputies the pair had been drinking and arguing for several hours, then alleged McMichael choked him, the sheriff's office said. A witness reported hearing hours of arguing, then walking in to find both people on the kitchen floor.
Court records show McMichael is charged with one count of domestic battery involving physical contact and is scheduled for a Will County court appearance at 9 a.m. Saturday. She was booked into the Will County Adult Detention Facility.
Family background
Steve "Mongo" McMichael died in April 2025 after a multi-year battle with ALS, and coverage at the time noted that Misty McMichael had served as his primary caregiver. The Chicago Sun-Times detailed his hospice care and death, while earlier Hoodline reporting chronicled the family's role in his final months. The couple are survived by their daughter, who was 17 at the time of Steve McMichael's passing, according to prior reports.
Legal context
Under Illinois law, domestic battery is defined in 720 ILCS 5/12-3.2 and is generally a Class A misdemeanor that can carry up to 364 days in jail and fines. Prior convictions or conduct such as strangulation can elevate the charge to a felony under the state code. The statute posted by The Illinois General Assembly also lists enhancements and mandatory minimums for repeat or aggravated offenses.
What’s next
Court records list McMichael's initial appearance for 9 a.m. Saturday in Will County, where prosecutors will decide how to proceed with the case. The sheriff's office has provided its account to local media, and additional details are likely to emerge in court filings as the case moves forward.
