Matilda’s All-Day Cafe has taken over a restored 1914 bungalow on Roosevelt Row, giving the much loved First Place Coffee truck a full time home as an all day restaurant and bar in downtown Phoenix. The space runs as a morning coffee counter, a midday lunch spot and an evening wine and cocktails hangout, with a front porch and back patio that keep the focus on a neighborhood vibe. Regulars from the vintage truck will find familiar seasonal drinks and the same dog friendly, community first energy carried into the new setting.
The Arizona Republic published a video Wednesday that walks viewers through the cafe’s layered interior and hand painted ceiling, describing the shop as the brick and mortar outpost of First Place Coffee. The piece, produced by Mark Henle, highlights the service counter, cozy dining rooms and the outdoor garden that the owners say will host daytime gatherings and evening activations. As reported by The Arizona Republic, Matilda’s serves coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner under one roof.
From Truck To Bungalow
The Matilda name and the team behind it trace back to First Place Coffee’s 1970 Chevy P10 truck, which built a following around Phoenix before the move indoors. Owner Devon McConville told Phoenix New Times that she wanted a permanent home that preserved the truck’s neighborhood spirit and dog friendly hospitality. The bungalow at 822 N. Sixth Avenue, the former Garden Bar space, now features intimate dining rooms, a lounge and a front porch designed for lingering.
What To Order And The Space
Matilda’s menu builds on First Place Coffee’s seasonal lineup, including the Honeycomb, the Diablo and lavender scented coffee drinks, while adding sandwiches, pastries and a modest dinner program. The First Place Coffee site notes that the truck will continue to operate alongside the cafe and lists its popular seasonal drinks. According to First Place Coffee, Matilda’s will partner with local bakers and offer a small bar program for wine and cocktails.
Roosevelt Row’s New Neighbor
Local design studio Need To Know handled the remodel, and a hand painted ceiling mural gives the bungalow a playful, lived in focal point that outlets have called out in their coverage. The arrival of Matilda’s adds to a broader trend toward all day, neighborhood focused concepts in Roosevelt Row, mixing morning coffee culture with evening social life. Earlier reporting and profiles of the space are available from Arizona Foothills and the walkthrough by The Arizona Republic.
