Berthoud: What started as a late-night argument south of Carter Lake turned into an early-morning barricade situation Monday, ending with deputies hauling a man off to jail after an hours-long standoff in the dark. According to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, one person was reportedly knocked unconscious, and another was taken to a local hospital before the suspect holed up in an outbuilding on his own property.
In a Facebook post, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were sent out on a 9-1-1 call for an argument that escalated into an assault. Callers reported the suspect shoved one person and repeatedly punched another. Deputies determined the man lives south of Carter Lake and said he initially drove away, then later returned to the property and hid inside an outbuilding. K9 Mav was brought in to search the structure, but could not get to the building’s interior, according to the post.
How deputies ended the standoff
"While most people were soundly asleep Monday morning, our deputies began the day with a barricaded suspect in Berthoud," the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office wrote, describing a carefully coordinated response. The agency called in Larimer County’s All Hazards/Crisis Response (AHCR) team, which used chemical irritants to pressure the suspect to come out. Deputies also obtained a warrant to enter and clear the outbuildings on the property, eventually finding the man and taking him into custody at about 6:15 a.m.
Charges and booking
According to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was booked into the Larimer County Jail on multiple counts, including second-degree assault (F4), obstructing a peace officer (M2), harassment, shove or strike or kick (M1), and driving under restraint. The sheriff’s post also notes that deputies entered and cleared the property’s outbuildings with a warrant before the arrest was made. The suspect’s name was not released in the initial information.

The sheriff’s office has not yet provided identifying details for the suspect or an update on the condition of the injured victim.
