A late-night house fire in Jacksonville's Springfield neighborhood turned deadly Friday, with one person discovered dead inside the home, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Fire crews knocked down the blaze and, once the scene was safe to enter, located an individual inside the structure. Detectives have opened an active investigation into what happened.

JSO said patrol officers were dispatched around 11:30 p.m. to the 1600 block of Ionia Street to assist Jacksonville Fire and Rescue. After firefighters extinguished the flames, an individual was found deceased inside the building. Detectives with JSO’s Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene and are working the case alongside the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office. Multiple witnesses were taken to the Police Memorial Building for interviews, and the sheriff’s office asked anyone with information to call 904-630-0500, email [email protected] or contact Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS, as reported by News4JAX.

Video Captures Late-Night Scramble

First Coast News cameras caught the overnight response, footage that was later reposted by Spot On Florida and shows thick smoke hanging over the block as crews work outside the home. The clip does not identify the victim and offers no clues about what sparked the fire. Investigators say the cause and circumstances remain under review, as posted by Spot On Florida.

The sheriff’s office has described the case as an active investigation and says it is coordinating with partner agencies as needed. This story will be updated when JSO releases additional details.
