In a distressing incident that ended fatally, body-worn camera footage from a Howard County police officer captures the moments leading up to a car crash that resulted in the death of a juvenile. The ID of the young girl, a minor, has been withheld following the tragic event that occurred on January 17.
According to WMAR2-News, the incident began when an officer, later identified as First Class Brian Maurantonio, engaged in pursuit after the girl failed to stop her vehicle upon his signaling. The chase quickly turned sour as the girl's car veered off Route 32 near Broken Land Parkway, subsequently crashing into a wooded area, overturning, and catching fire. Attempts to swiftly extinguish the flames by the officers were captured on video, yet proved tragically insufficient.
Maurantonio, a four-year member of the Howard County Police Department, was driving an unmarked patrol car during the encounter. Details released by the Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division (IID) note that the pursuit came to a horrific conclusion when the car burst into flames, and despite the response efforts, the girl passed away at the scene.
The incident has not gone unnoticed, prompting the IID to thoroughly investigate the tragic sequence of events that led up to the fatal crash. WMAR-2 News detailed that multiple officers were seen on the bodycam footage trying to desperately douse the fire that ultimately claimed the young driver's life.
