The Boston City Council has passed a resolution opposing the federal government’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants. The resolution, led by Councilor Louijeune, urges federal officials to reconsider and reinstate TPS protections due to ongoing risks in Haiti and the impact on Haitian nationals living in Boston, as per the City of Boston release.
Haiti was granted TPS after the 2010 earthquake, and continued political instability and environmental challenges have made returning unsafe. The resolution notes that ending TPS affects many Haitians who have established lives in Boston, highlighting the city’s ties to its Haitian community.
The Council calls on federal authorities to restore TPS and work with local and state agencies to protect Haitian nationals. The resolution emphasizes ensuring safety and stability for immigrants and maintaining Boston’s support for its diverse population.
