A former Bronx charter school basketball coach has been indicted on multiple sex crime charges after prosecutors allege he raped a 14-year-old girl at a Bronx motel in December 2024. The defendant, identified in court records as Jayvone Johnson, previously worked as a gym teacher in the borough. Authorities are asking anyone with information or other potential victims to contact investigators.
Grand Jury Indicts Ex-Coach
According to PIX11, Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced that a grand jury returned an indictment tied to an alleged Dec. 23, 2024 incident at the Jet Set Motel on Third Avenue. The outlet reports that the indictment charges Johnson with rape, sexual abuse, sexual misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child.
Arrest, Plea And Supervised Release
As CBS New York reported, the NYPD Bronx Special Victims Squad arrested Johnson in December. Court filings cited by the station show he pleaded not guilty and was released on supervised release while the case proceeds.
Criminal complaints quoted by local outlets allege the encounter at the motel happened after school hours. Police released Johnson’s photo as part of the investigation in an effort to identify any additional victims, according to CBS New York.
School Cuts Ties, Parents React
Johnson had been working as a gym teacher and girls’ basketball coach at Icahn Charter School 2. The school confirmed he is no longer employed there, according to WABC/ABC7.
Parents in the Van Nest neighborhood told local reporters they were stunned by the accusations and said school leaders moved quickly to act once the allegations came to light, WABC/ABC7 reported.
Felony Charges And Potential Penalties
The charges listed in the indictment are felonies under New York law. N.Y. Penal Law §130.30 defines rape in the second degree as a class D felony, and other sex-offense provisions cited in the case carry their own felony classifications.
Convictions on those counts can bring prison time and mandatory sex-offender registration under state rules. Prosecutors say the investigation into Johnson and any possible additional victims remains active.
Investigators Seek Tips, Possible Additional Victims
Police and prosecutors are asking anyone with information about Johnson or the allegations to contact the NYPD Sex Crimes Hotline or Crime Stoppers. The tip lines investigators are using are listed in coverage by WABC/ABC7, and officials say they will review any new reports that come in.
Authorities indicate additional charges may be filed if more victims come forward. Johnson is presumed innocent while the case proceeds through the legal system. Updates will be provided as prosecutors submit new filings and court proceedings continue.
