A routine brush fire call in rural Peñitas turned into a capital murder investigation on Tuesday after firefighters found a burned vehicle containing two bodies inside, authorities said. The victims were burned beyond recognition, and the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office has ordered autopsies as investigators work to confirm who they are.
How the vehicle was discovered
Hidalgo County Sheriff J.E. "Eddie" Guerra said Peñitas Fire Department crews were dispatched at about 4:16 p.m. to a brush fire on 4 Mile Line between Tom Gil Road and Circle 6 Road. Once firefighters knocked down the flames, they discovered a vehicle with two occupants inside, prompting what the sheriff's office is treating as a homicide investigation. Peñitas police then requested that Hidalgo County Major Crimes detectives take the lead, according to MySanAntonio.
Autopsies ordered and vehicle linked to missing person
Investigators have ordered autopsies to determine the victims' genders and gather forensic evidence. The burned vehicle has been linked to a woman recently reported missing from La Grulla, though officials have not publicly released the victims' names while DNA comparisons are underway, per KRGV.
