Antioch police say last Friday's shooting on Buchanan Road ended with a woman in the hospital and a 43-year-old Oakley man in jail on an attempted murder charge.

Officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of Buchanan Road around 8:39 PM after a ShotSpotter activation signaled possible gunfire in the area. According to a press release from the Antioch Police Department, officers arrived and found evidence consistent with a shooting, but no victim on scene.

Police say a 42-year-old woman later showed up at a local hospital on her own with gunshot wounds. She was treated and is expected to survive, according to the release.

What Police Say Happened Next

Detectives began canvassing the neighborhood, talking to witnesses, and collecting physical evidence. The Antioch Police Department said the work led investigators to a suspect, 43-year-old Oakley resident Jonta Davenport.

Antioch police credited help from partner agencies and said they received assistance from San Rafael and Concord police as they worked to track Davenport down.

San Rafael officers located Davenport in Marin County and detained him until Antioch police could take him into custody, according to The Mercury News.

Jail records reviewed by the paper show Davenport was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of attempted murder under Penal Code § 664/187(a), with bail set at $1 million.

Ongoing Probe In A City On Edge

The arrest lands amid a run of gun violence in Antioch, where local reporting shows the city recorded 16 homicides in 2024, the highest tally since 2020. Police have not publicly discussed a motive in the Buchanan Road shooting.

Detectives say the case is still active, and they are holding back additional details for now.
