What was supposed to be a big trail ride hangout in northeast Houston turned into a crime scene Saturday night, after a shootout behind a strip center left six people wounded and sent officers rushing to the area, according to police.
All six victims were taken to nearby hospitals, and the large response from law enforcement quickly shut down the area as investigators tried to sort out what happened.
What Police Say Happened
Houston police say officers arrived after reports of gunfire and found six people suffering from gunshot wounds, several of whom were hospitalized, authorities told KHOU. According to the station, the shooting happened behind a strip-center shopping plaza in northeast Houston during a large trail-ride gathering, and investigators were still working the scene late into Saturday night.
Police did not immediately release descriptions of any suspects and had not announced any arrests by the time officers cleared the scene.
Trail Rides And Safety Concerns
Trail-ride events in and around the Houston area can draw thousands of people and, in some cases, have spilled into violence at unsanctioned after-parties, putting a spotlight on security and permitting.
In 2023, a "trail ride pasture party" near Prairie View A&M left seven people wounded, CBS News reported, and officials have previously debated how to handle crowd control for large, informal gatherings. Those past incidents have fueled questions about whether promoters and local authorities are sticking to agreed safety protocols.

Investigators remained at the strip center collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses, according to the KHOU report, and the Houston Police Department has classified the case as active.
Businesses and nearby residents were urged to avoid the area while officers worked. As of late Saturday night, officials had not released further information on the conditions of the six victims.
