Residents across the Charlotte region should be cautious this morning as patches of black ice are likely to form again, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS has issued a special weather statement warning of slick conditions, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. The culprit is the falling nighttime temperatures causing any residual moisture on the ground to refreeze.
The NWS statement explicates that "Temperatures have fallen below freezing again across the area, causing lingering runoff from melted snow and ice to refreeze on roads." Commuters are advised to be prepared for these treacherous spots during the morning rush. Relief is expected later in the day as temperatures are forecast to climb into the 40s and low 50s by the afternoon, helping to thaw any icy patches.
Looking ahead, the weather in Charlotte is expected to be mostly cloudy today, with highs reaching near 46 degrees. The calm winds this morning are predicted to pick up slightly, coming from the south southwest at about 5 mph in the afternoon. Tonight, there's a 50 percent chance of rain after 10 pm with light new precipitation amounts, signaling less risk of black ice formation compared to the morning hours.
For those venting out early, the NWS advises "Use extra caution when walking on sidewalks, driveways, and in parking lots." This warning extends beyond drivers, acknowledging that pedestrian areas are equally vulnerable to the freeze and can lead to falls and injuries. The forecast for the next several days includes a mix of rain and snow, with conditions clearing up by the end of the week, offering sunny days with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s.
