Charlotte residents are waking up to bitterly cold conditions this morning, with the National Weather Service issuing a cold weather advisory that remains in effect. As of the early hours, temperatures in Charlotte N.C. hovered at a frigid 11°F, and those in higher elevations faced even more formidable conditions.
The cold snap, which is expected to lift by 9 AM EST according to the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC, brought wind chills that could plunge to as low as 5 below zero in the North Carolina mountains. Precautions have been advised, as the "cold wind chills near or below zero could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions are not taken."
While today's skies are forecasted to be sunny with a high near 39 in Charlotte, tonight's outlook remains clear with an anticipated low around 20. The weather trend continues tomorrow, becoming mostly cloudy with a high near 44, and conditions are ripe for rain with a 40 percent chance by tomorrow night, as per NWS.
Special weather statements have also been issued, warning of black ice impacting the morning commute. "With temperatures below freezing across the region, areas of black ice are expected to remain on roadways this morning," according to the National Weather Service. They further warn that, "Although temperatures will rise above freezing across most locations by afternoon, patchy black ice may linger across the higher elevations of the North Carolina mountains as well as in shaded areas throughout the day."
As the week progresses, the forecast hints at some reprieve from the cold. Wednesday introduces a 40 percent chance of rain and a slightly higher high near 46. By Friday, the sun dominates once again with a high near 50, marking a potential end to the brief but harsh grip of winter felt by the region.
In response to the cold, the National Weather Service implores residents to "use caution while traveling outside" and to don "appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves." It's also a time for the community to band together, as they suggest to "make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors."
