Charlotte is gearing up for a global military sports takeover, with organizers of the 2027 Military World Games saying they have invited all 142 nations in CISM to send teams. The Games are set for June 25 to July 4, 2027, and the 10-day event could bring an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 military athletes, coaches and support staff to venues spread across the Carolinas.

According to the Charlotte Business Journal, invitations went to CISM's full membership, and CISM's own materials list 142 member nations. Local organizers have told TV crews the athlete field alone could reach into the thousands, a range covered by WSOC.

Venues Still Being Locked In

CISM delegations and the local organizing committee have been touring potential sites across North and South Carolina as they work to assemble roughly 20 competition and training venues. Locations floated in coverage include UNC Charlotte, Spectrum Center, Truist Field, the U.S. National Whitewater Center and American Legion Memorial Stadium. Axios has reported that venue agreements are not yet finalized, so the prospective list is still just that: prospective.

Local Power Players, Sponsors And Staff

The local organizing committee is lining up civic leaders and corporate partners to pull off the Games and manage everything from housing to transportation. In a press release distributed via MWG27/PRWeb, organizers named longtime Charlotte civic heavyweight Hugh McColl as an honorary chair. A separate release announced Charlotte Pipe & Foundry as the event’s first official partner.

Economic Stakes And The Price Of Hosting

Organizers and analysts are pitching the Games as a major economic play for the Carolinas, with Axios citing studies that estimate roughly $3 billion in impact for the region. Local TV coverage has also pointed out that the Games are not cheap to host. Organizers told WSOC the upfront bill could hit the tens of millions, a tab they say will be covered through sponsorships, ticketing and private donations rather than public funds.

What Comes Next

Organizers say invitations are out and that the list of participating nations, the exact venue lineup and a full competition schedule should be locked in over the coming months. Venue agreements remain unsettled, according to the Charlotte Business Journal, which means there is still work ahead before tickets go on sale. City and county officials are expected to coordinate transportation, security and volunteer plans as contracts are signed, and the local organizing committee says it will release official venue and ticketing details once those agreements are complete.
