What began as a routine welfare check in the 4000 block of Cicada Lane in north Harris County turned into a deadly scene early Tuesday, after deputies found a woman fatally shot and a man critically injured. As the situation escalated, deputies cleared other people from the home and called in tactical units.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez posted on X that deputies were told a male may have fired shots before they arrived. According to the sheriff, the man, reportedly armed, barricaded himself in a room with a woman and stopped responding to authorities. SWAT members eventually went in, found the woman dead from a gunshot wound, and discovered the man with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The two were described as being in a dating relationship and sharing a child, and CSI along with homicide detectives were called to process the scene, as reported by Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

Investigators treated the case as an active, preliminary homicide probe while crime-scene technicians collected evidence and spoke with neighbors. In recent years, domestic-related violence has made up a growing share of local homicides, a trend that helped prompt the Houston Police Department to create a Family Violence Division, the Houston Chronicle reported.
