Authorities in Elyria arrested Joshua Telford, a 35-year-old man from Cincinnati, on allegations of grooming and sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl. The Elyria Police Department launched an investigation in January following a report from the victim's parent, according to a Cleveland19 news article. Telford reportedly began communicating with the child when she was just 11 years old and later traveled to Elyria, where the alleged assault took place.
Telford faces a slew of charges, including two counts each of rape and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, pandering obscenity involving a minor, disseminating matter harmful to juveniles, three counts of criminal child enticement, and one count of grooming. The U.S. Marshals Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team assisted in Telford's arrest, as detailed in a statement obtained by FOX8 News. After the arrest in Hamilton County, Elyria police detectives took custody of Telford and booked him into the Lorain County Jail without bond.
The case has prompted the Elyria Police Department to urge parents and guardians to monitor their children's online activity closely. "We recognize the sensitivity of cases such as this and remain dedicated to supporting victims and their families while ensuring a thorough, professional, and compassionate investigation," Capt. Bill Lantz said in a news release obtained by Cleveland.com.
As this disturbing case unfolds, the authorities have called for public assistance in gathering more information. Anyone with knowledge related to the investigation is encouraged to contact Detective Robinson of the Elyria Police Department. The department remains firmly committed to combating crimes that exploit minors and continues to support the victims and their families throughout these proceedings.
