It is cloudy and about 19°F in Cleveland today. After a mostly quiet afternoon with a high near 37°F, a clipper-style system is set to slide in after 7 p.m., bringing light snow and gusty southwest winds overnight. Most of the city is expected to pick up under an inch.

Snow is likely to develop after 7 p.m. today and continue tomorrow morning, with an elevated chance of precipitation overnight and southwest gusts up to around 29 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Cleveland. While accumulations in the metro are expected to be light, the office has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for southern Erie and Crawford Counties in Pennsylvania from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 1 p.m. Wednesday, where 2–5 inches are possible.

Timing And Impacts

The heaviest, lake-enhanced bands will be quickest to ramp up across far northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania late Tuesday night, with the potential for a quick 2–4+ inch burst over a 4–6 hour window well inland of Lake Erie. Around Cleveland, bridges and untreated side streets are most at risk for slick spots Wednesday morning, so early commuters should allow extra time. This is an update to our Feb. 22 forecast. You can find our earlier breakdown of the sneaky snow and nasty gusts here.

Afternoon Winds Pick Up

Southwest winds will increase through the afternoon into the evening, rising to roughly 13–17 mph with gusts near 20–30 mph after sunset. Those gusts can reduce visibility in heavier snow bursts and push the light accumulation around. Lakeshore areas and exposed bridges will feel the strongest gusts, so it is a good idea to secure loose outdoor items if you can.

Travel And What To Do

Plan on slick patches and occasional visibility drops overnight into Wednesday. Slow down, give plow crews room to work, and check transit and school updates before heading out. Keeping basic winter gear in your vehicle is still smart, even for short trips.

Looking beyond midweek, forecasters note another system could clip the region Thursday, but trends have shifted south and may spare the heaviest snow. The weekend looks milder, with highs near the mid-40s by Friday. Updates will be posted if advisories change.
