Deputies say a Pompano Beach man turned big-box store trading cards into his own side hustle, swiping boxes from a Target in Lake Park and flipping them online as part of a broader retail theft scheme that stretched across Florida.
Arrest and charges
Palm Beach County detectives say they zeroed in on 33-year-old Keith Ryan Wallis of Pompano Beach and arrested him without incident on Feb. 23, 2026, in Broward County. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, investigators "adopted the case as an organized retail theft investigation" and allege Wallis sold the stolen trading cards using his personal eBay account.
An arrest warrant charges Wallis with two counts of organized retail theft, three counts of dealing in stolen property and one count of money laundering, the sheriff's office said.
Online resale and ORC patterns
Detectives say the case picked up speed once they followed the money, tracing online sales and bank deposits. That playbook lines up with how organized retail crime is increasingly playing out nationwide, with thieves quickly turning stolen goods into cash through online resale.
Security and investigations firms warn that digital marketplaces have become a key tool for organized retail rings, making it harder for store security teams and prosecutors to keep up. Pinkerton reports that organized crews are leaning heavily on e-commerce and second-hand platforms to fence merchandise once it is out the door.
Scope of the alleged thefts
Investigators with the sheriff's office say they tied Wallis to 75 documented thefts around the state, totaling $10,665.42 in documented losses. Those incidents allegedly generated about $39,000 through online sales.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, roughly 39 of the thefts targeted Target locations across Florida beginning in July 2025. Two of those cases in Lake Park, on Nov. 8 and Nov. 14, 2025, reportedly involved multiple boxes of sports trading cards taken from the store.
Detectives say the county's money-laundering unit carried out controlled purchases that showed the proceeds flowing into Wallis's personal bank account. The sheriff's office says investigators also executed a residential search warrant before taking him into custody.
Retail and collector impact
Card collectors and hobby shops have been sounding the alarm as trading cards and sealed hobby boxes climb in value and attract organized thieves. Big-box chains have responded with tougher loss-prevention tactics, from locking products behind glass to leaning on more surveillance and data-driven investigations.
Pinkerton notes that these strategies are aimed at slowing the steady stream of stolen goods into resale channels and shoring up the evidence needed to bring organized retail cases to court.
What’s next
The sheriff's office says Wallis remains in custody in Broward County while prosecutors and investigators coordinate with agencies in multiple counties. The investigation is still active, and law enforcement is asking anyone with information to contact the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office tip line.
