A Miami-area driver is behind bars after police say he assaulted a woman inside a moving car, blew off a traffic stop and tore through parts of Miami-Dade County in a dangerous pursuit that only ended when officers boxed him in at the edge of Medley. The woman in the car was taken to a hospital, and authorities say she is now cooperating with investigators.
What police say
According to the Miccosukee Police Department, officers tried to pull over the vehicle Wednesday near Krome Avenue and Tamiami Trail after getting reports that an assault was happening inside the car, as reported by CBS Miami. Police say the driver refused to stop and instead led officers on a pursuit, during which the car slammed into a patrol vehicle, forced other drivers off the road and, at times, the driver continued striking the woman inside while allegedly trying to run a patrol unit off the road. The chase finally ended in the town of Medley, where officers took the driver into custody. No officers were hurt, according to authorities.
Legal implications
Under Florida law, refusing to stop for law enforcement can lead to charges of fleeing or attempting to elude, and that offense can be upgraded to aggravated fleeing, a felony, if there is injury, property damage or a wanton disregard for safety, as outlined in Florida Statutes. Depending on what investigators document from the pursuit, prosecutors could file misdemeanor or felony counts, with potential penalties ranging from fines to prison time.
Tribal police and the area
The Miccosukee Police Department, a tribal police force with stations along the Tamiami Trail and at the Miccosukee Resort, is the agency that reported the incident. The reservation lies west of Krome Avenue along U.S. 41, a stretch that regularly carries both tribal and county traffic, according to the Miccosukee Tribe's website. That layout helps explain how a stop that began near tribal land turned into a pursuit that crossed several jurisdictions before wrapping up in Medley.
Police say charges are pending, the woman is cooperating with investigators, and officials have not yet released the driver's name while processing continues, as reported by CBS Miami. The investigation remains active, and authorities have not given a timeline for when formal charging decisions will be announced.
