New forensic findings show the man pulled from Johnson Creek in late December died from a gunshot wound, according to Portland police. The victim, 32-year-old Jamal Rodgers, was recovered from the water near Southeast 102nd Avenue and Southeast Foster Road on Dec. 30, 2025, and detectives say no arrests have been made.
The Portland Police Bureau first publicly disclosed the discovery in early January, after the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office dive team recovered Rodgers' body and the medical examiner identified him. In that initial release, the bureau described the case as a homicide and asked for the public's help with any information about what happened, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
Medical Examiner Updates Cause Of Death
On Thursday, the Portland Police Bureau released an update that put a sharper point on the case. The medical examiner now lists a gunshot as Jamal Rodgers' cause of death, confirming the shooting as the reason he died. Local coverage of the new findings was reported by KPTV, which noted that the Homicide Unit is still investigating and that no one has been taken into custody.
