The Kraft Family Blood Donor Center, a critical facility at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham & Women’s Hospital is experiencing a severe blood shortage. The shortfall is so acute that care for patients with cancer and other serious illnesses could be affected. This call to action for more donors comes as the national blood supply sees a deficit of over 12,000 units of red blood cells and 700 units of platelets, with recent storms resulting in the closure of blood drives and flight cancellations disrupting collection efforts. Stephanie Ferrara, the nurse director of the center, expressed concern having "not experienced such a serious shortage outside a trauma event," as reported by WHDH.
The need for platelets is particularly urgent, as they play a vital role in clotting and wound healing and, unlike other blood products, cannot be manufactured. Platelets have a short shelf life of five days, making the requirement for continuous donations even more critical. The Kraft Family Blood Donor Center emphasizes the significance of local support, positioned to make a life-saving difference for community patients, and encourages donations at their Jimmy Fund Building location or through the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Hospital Blood Mobile.
For those interested in contributing to the local blood supply, appointments can be made by calling 617-632-3206, emailing [email protected], or scheduling online through the Brigham & Women's Hospital website. Additionally, upcoming blood drives are open to the public and individuals can view these on the center's online calendar or consider hosting a drive with the help of the Dana-Farber Brigham Blood Mobile, which is made possible by the Friends of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Friends of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Prior to donating, participants should engage with donor education materials and bring required documentation to their appointment, including their donor number and confirmation sheet. The center also offers a monthly newsletter keeping donors informed on upcoming opportunities and the impact of their donations.
