A late Thursday trip along SW College Road ended in tragedy when a bicyclist was hit and killed in Ocala, police said. The collision happened in the 2000 block of SW College Road near the Target shopping area, and emergency crews pronounced the rider dead at the scene. Officers shut down the roadway while investigators documented the crash, then later reopened the lanes once the scene was cleared.
According to ClickOrlando, Ocala police confirmed the fatality but did not immediately release the bicyclist's name or say whether anyone had been detained. The outlet reported that traffic along that stretch of SW College Road was temporarily halted so investigators could work the scene before normal flow resumed.
As reported by WCJB, officers said the crash occurred near the 2000 block of Southwest College Road by the Target, and both eastbound and westbound lanes were blocked during the response. WCJB noted that the Ocala Police Department is leading the investigation and has asked anyone with information to come forward.
SW College Road Already Tagged as High Risk
SW College Road, also known as State Road 200, is not a new concern for city leaders. It has been identified as one of several high-risk corridors for pedestrian and bicycle crashes, prompting targeted enforcement and safety campaigns. The Ocala Gazette reported on a grant-funded program that pays for overtime so officers can run high-visibility enforcement along dangerous stretches, including parts of State Road 200. Officials have pointed to speeding, impairment, and distracted driving as common factors in local bicycle and pedestrian deaths.
Police Still Piecing Together What Happened
Ocala Police have asked anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have video from the area to contact the department as the investigation continues. Per ClickOrlando, no additional information has been released, and no arrests or charges have been announced. Authorities said they plan to provide updates once more details are confirmed.
