A nighttime crossing on Hodges Boulevard turned fatal Thursday when a woman in her mid-40s was hit by a car at the Richmond Park Drive intersection in Jacksonville. She was rushed to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, authorities said. The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
What the sheriff's office says
According to a statement to Action News Jax, the crash happened around 7:45 p.m. A man driving a Nissan Sentra northbound on Hodges Boulevard struck the woman as she crossed the intersection at Richmond Park Drive. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the driver was not injured and is cooperating with detectives.
JSO noted the collision occurred on a dark stretch of the road as officers worked the scene, a detail that underscored the tense atmosphere as investigators documented the crash site.
Rising toll on Duval County roads
The crash was recorded as the 35th traffic fatality in Duval County this year and the 10th involving a pedestrian, and the intersection was briefly shut down while investigators processed the scene, according to News4Jax. Earlier this month, a motorcyclist died in a separate collision on Hodges Boulevard, adding to a string of deadly crashes along the busy route.
Investigation ongoing
Investigators have not released the victim's name, pending notification of her family. JSO said the driver was not injured. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office as detectives continue to investigate, Action News Jax reported.
